The Royal Activities of King Rama IV, King King Mongkut , Thailand

Upon his accession to the throne, King Mongkut or King Rama IV, ruling from 1851–1868, became very interested in the study of astronomy. He was knowledgeable in the subject and had
scientific equipment installed in the royal residence. Items which were not common
included a barometer, a telescope, a microscope, maps and wall clocks.
The King was also competent in foreign affairs. During his reign, Thailand
began to sign agreements and treaties with foreign countries, resulting in drastic
changes to the nation, which brought both advantages and disadvantages. If
one considers potential harm that might happen to the country if it remained
isolated, those agreements and treaties could be seen as a correct move by the
King. The Bowring Treaty with Great Britain contributed immensely to the country’s
safety. Great Britain would have used force if Thailand had continued its closed
door policy to foreigners. The King realized that modern warfare was different from
the past because it relied on advanced technology and not only military leaders.
