Ubon Ratchatani to Sakon Nakhon, the Trip From Hell

I was posting about my trip on public transportation from Sakon Nakhon to Surin and on to Ubon Ratchatani to include the outstanding bus station there. And now the time has come to relate the last part of the trip, or the do not believe the sign, it might say first class, but the only first class is first class torture, bus from Ubon to Sakon Nakhon.
Many years ago I traveled with some regularity from Udon Thani to Ubon to visit Wat Pa Nanachat. There were 2 routes, the one I generally took traveled from Ubon to Khon Kaen, Mahasarakham, Roiet,Yasothon and into Ubon. I forget exactly how long the trip took, but I was 10 years younger at the time and well not luxurious it was above bearable.. The minute I saw the green monster…

I remembered the one time I used it years ago and it was not a pleasant memory. Oh well 10 years had passed, perhaps things had changed, But NOOO forget that.
First class buses are supposed to only stop in municipalities on the route with stations. In this case that would be Amnat Charoen,Mukdahan,That Phanom,Sakon Nakhon… Second and third class buses stop anywhere and everywhere along the way.
Some years ago I learned that it is against the law for people to be standing in the aisle of a moving bus. It was solved for some time by using little plastic stools in the aisle. A look at the happy face in the picture will give you an idea of how this trip progressed as even a Thai was disgusted with the situation. And granny behind the girl looks none to pleased either.
Thing were not terrible until we reached Mukdahan, but all along the way the driver stopped wherever some stood along the road and picked up and disgorged passengers. These folks were all tip money to him as none of these folks were issued tickets.
My ticket cost about 240 Baht Ubon to Sakon Nakhon the half way point of the trip is That Phanom where for 240 Baht people were allowed the privelge to be jammed into a standing postion in the aisle.
As this was the cold season thing did not reach sauna stage until about That Phanom where one could feel the hot moist air escape whenever the door was opened to let a prisoner escape or to jam in another inmate. You might also imagine someone in the back of the bus trying to get to the front for their stop. Averaging speeds of Zero and 130 kilometers per hour the trip to Sakon Nakhon lasted only a bit over 4 hours not really a bad trip if one gets on the bus at the start and can manage to ignore all that is going on, and the weather is not hot and the bus does not have an accident. Here is the slideshow of first class travel in Isaan.
