This is a rerelease of the post with geotagged photos that can now be see at Google+. The usual route between Sakon Nakhon and Mukdahan is Route 223 to the 212 in That Phanom then south. Over the years I have taken a number of alternatives and recently started traveling and searching for places of interest along Route 2287 to Nong Kaen and route 2292. While it looks logical to follow Route 3008 on to the 212 beware that this road is under construction, and I would advise checking out condition before travelling that route.
The Sakon Nakhon and Mukdahan of the 2287 in the section through the mountains (look in Google Earth or Maps in Satellite mode) is an are with little or none 3G signal, nor any type of signal, which makes it difficult to locate places of interest. There are plenty of caves and temles of interest along the route, but finding them is a bugger…

Wat Phu  Kampra ust west of Manao village is along the road on the south side. I found the detail work on the chedi quite interesting and the mummified body of Luang Por Kham Noi is still onsite. Unfortunately the glass enclosure housing his remains is poorly maintained and seeing the body is nearly impossible.
This is a route worth discovering. Click here to view my Mukdahan Map Picasa is no longer accessible, but you can view the geotagged photos at Google+ Click Here

  2. It is interesting to explore new route when you have got a lot of time to spend on a trip.
Normally, I do not have time to go out of the traditional routes with the result that I do not know much about my Isan.
Though I have visited 76 provinces plus Bangkok Metropolitan Administration or BMA, I rarely take a closer look at cultural aspects of buildings, foods, herbal medicines, clothes or the four necessities.
I do not pay much attention to the ways people entertain themselves while they are working or after accomplishing their hard works.
I do not really ponder over the political and religious believes of the locals .
I just take a brief look or a CHA-NGOK TOUR to show I have come to the places.
    That is all.
But, whenever I read your post I become more and more prepared to learn about the roots of mine – Isan culture.
